Cabinet Photo of 2nd Lieutenant Charles S. Fowler – 19th U.S. Infantry.
This cabinet photo was taken by E.E. Henry, Leavenworth, Ks., sometime between 1883-85. The image is signed on the reverse, “Yours with much muchness / Chas S. Fowler. / 2 Lieut. 19th Infry.” Then noted below by the recipient, “Classmate at Ft. Leavenworth, 1883-5. These two men may have been at the Infantry & Cavalry School?
Fowler is wearing is 5 button fatigue blouse perhaps a year before becoming an officer. He began his career as a private, saddler, corporal in Co. E. 4th U.S. Cavalry. He was appointed sergeant of Co. C, 19th Infantry in August of 1878 to July of 1882, before his commissioning. He retired in 1891 as a 1st Lieutenant.
