Cabinet Photo of General Alfred Terry In Civil War era Dress Uniform. The cabinet photo is 4 x 6.5 inches, and shows the General in his dress uniform. No photographer information ,but written on the reverse is “Gen A. Terry USA,” and then noted in pencil, “Gen Custer’s Commanding General.” The signature has some similar aspects to General Terry’s autograph, but can’t confirm.
Terry began the Civil War service as colonel of the 2nd Conn, Infantry., rose to the rank of major general during the war, and remained in the U.S. Army afterwards. He commanded the Department of the Dakota, and was George Armstrong Custer’s commanding officer during the Sioux Campaign of 1876 which ended in Custer’s 7th Cavalry losing 5 whole companies under his command, and more casualties with the Reno – Benteen detachment during the attack on the Indian camp at the Little Big Horn river on June 25, 1876.
