Description

CDV – 11th Maine Officer & The Original Album Were Found.

The image is Albert Maxfield, from Windham, Me. who enlisted as a private into the 11th Maine Infantry on February, 27, 1862, and re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer in 1864, and became a sergeant major a few days later. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in July, and Captain in December of 1864.  During his time in service, Maxfield was slightly wounded at New Market, Cross Roads, Va in October of 1864; was taken POW in April of 1865 at Clover Hill (near Appomattox) , Va, and later exchanged in May of 1865 at Annapolis, Md.

Maxwell was in command of the regiment from Nov. 7, 1864 until after the Presidential election, the 11th being one of the regiments selected by Major Gen. Benjamin Butler to assist in keeping peace in New York City during the election. Albert Maxfield was the statistician for both the histories of Co. D, of the 11th Maine and later the regimental history published in 1896.

The image of Private Maxfield shows him wearing a frock coat, and will armed with bayoneted musket, small revolver in his waist belt, and a bowie knife.  Photograph taken by Tristham Hanson,  Factory Island, Saco, Maine.

The CDV album his a family album that has images from the Civil War era to the turn of the 20th Century. Most of the names are identified and appear to be the original folks. Some images have been removed (3), found this way when I purchased it.  I have no idea what is missing. There is another soldier image, named Albert Maines, and the only one I can find in the data system is one from the 16th Kentucky Infantry. I have not researched the connection between the family, Maxfield and Maines.  The family album name is Skinner, several have no family designation except the last two, labeled, “Hibbard” -a husband and wife. Maxfield followed up the rear being last.

CDVs, tintypes, and later photographs tipped in with tape, (done a long time ago – Skinner family id’s).

Overall album and images are very good.
