John M. Ellis enlisted as a corporal in the 35th Massachusetts Infantry in August of 1862 and while serving in Company G, he rose to the ranks of 1st sergeant, 2nd and 1st lieutenant. He transferred to the 29th Mass in June of 1865, and mustered out in July of 1865.
The 35th was heavily engaged at the Battle of Antietam, with 50 killed, nearly 200 wounded. Sent west, and had actions at Jackson, Mississippi, and the Tennessee Campaign. They returned east and fought at some of the biggest battle of the war.
