CDV – Ahiel S. Rhodes, Jr. 8th Massachusetts Infantry.  Rhodes was from Marblehead, Mass, and enlisted in April of 1861 as a 1st lieutenant into Co, B, 8th Massachusetts Infantry, and mustered out at Boston on August 1, 1861.  He saw service in the Baltimore/ Washington, D.C. area, doing guard duty, etc.  The 8th Mass was one of the earliest regiment to arrive at the seat of war.  On March 14, 1862, Rhodes was commissioned into Co. M of the Mass 1st Heavy Artillery, and mustered out on March 12, 1865.  He had been promoted to captain as of November 25, 1862 into Co. G.

Photograph has no backmark other than pencil notations in regards to his service. The image was probably taken as 1st lieutenant in the 8th Mass. and wearing the uniform of that regiment. Note service stripes, militia pattern sword C-1840-50s, and state pattern uniform and cap.
