Description

CDV – Captain Frederic A. Lull 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery.

This image shows Captain Lull of the Massachusetts 2nd Heavy Artillery.  He enlisted as a private  in April 1861 into the Mass 1st Light Artillery (Cook’s Battery), and were sent to the Naval Academy, and later Baltimore to insist in protecting the polls during the elections there. They mustered out at Camp Clare, Baltimore, Md, in August of that year.

Lull then mustered into the Mass. 5th Light Artillery in that December,  and without records, I assume he participated in the battles of Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, and later Gettysburg, prior to being discharged for promotion on August 1, 1863.

Lull, having been commissioned into the Mass 2nd Heavy Artillery, eventually raising to the rank of captain. That regiment mustered out at Wilmington, NC on September, 1865, having spent the remainder of the war in North Carolina on various campaigns.

The image was taken by John a. Heard, Boston, showing Lull seated wearing a sack coat.
