Samuel C. Eaton, enlisted as a captain in the 1st New York Engineers in September of 1861. He remained in service during the entire war. This unit served in the Dept. of the South mostly, and some under the Army of the James. Their heaviest action occurred at the siege of Fort Wagner, SC. The is an ident in pencil on the back, and could be a signature, “Capt S. Eaton / Vol. Eng Corps /U.S. Vols.”
