CDV- Captain Thomas S. Stewart, 19th U.S. Colored Infantry, commanding Co. “A.” Stewart is in civilian clothing with his signature on the image. The 19th USCT was organized at Camp Stanton, Maryland in December of 1863, and saw service in the Army of the Potomac, the Army of the James. He had prior service with the 13th New Hampshire Infantry.
The regiment had its first major engagement at the Wilderness in 1864, suffering heavy losses, then were participated at the siege of Petersburg, Appomattox CH, and soon after one of the first units to enter Richmond, when that city fell in April of 1865. The regiment served at Brownsville, Texas (on the Rio Grande River), Texas until January 15, 1867.
Stewart received a brevet major’s commission on March 13, 1865.
