Colonel Ellsworth was the first Union officer killed in the Civil War, which occured on May 23rd, when Ellsworth and his Fire Zouaves, made an excursion into Alexandria, Va., where they saw the Confederate flag being flown of the Marshall House, of that city. After cutting the flag down, and making his way down the hatch of the roof, was met by the owner of the property who leveded a shotgun at Ellsworth, and killed him instantly.
The news of his killing was an immediate impetus for recruitment in the North.
No back mark, and in very good condition.
