CDV – Lt.Col. John Hodges, Jr. 59th Massachusetts Infantry.  KIA Petersburg, Va.

John Hodges from Salem, Mass, was a 20 year old student when enlisting into the 8th Mass Infantry as a private in April of 1861, a “Minuteman” regiment that answered President Lincoln’s call for 75000 volunteers of defend the Capital. He mustered out with the regiment on August 1, 1861.

On August 28, 1861, he was commissioned into Co, B, of the 19th Mass Infantry, as a first lieutenant. and resigned on June 19, 1862. Again Hodges was commissioned into another Mass regiment, as a major in the 50th Mass Infantry on November, 11, 1862, and mustered at Wenham, Ma. in August of 1863.  His last duty in the volunteers was with the 59th Mass, being commissioned a lieutenant colonel on February 2, 1864.  He was killed at Petersburg, Va on July 30, 1863.

Very good condition. The image is trimmed (as are most of the images that came from a large Lowell, Ma CDV album), and he revenue stamp was removed by an old time collector.
