I strongly believe that the signature on the back of this image is Wilkeson’s signature.

CDV – Lt. Colonel Samuel H. Wilkeson 11th New York Cavalry.  Col. Wilkeson, from Buffalo, New York, enlisted into the 21st New York Infantry as a 1st lieutenant in May of 1861, and mustered out in January of 1862 at Washington, D.C.  He then was commissioned into Co. C of the 11th NY Cavalry in February, 1862, and served in that regiment as a captain, lt. colonel, and colonel, although not mustered in that last rank.

I believe this is a signed image on the back, “Lt.Col. S.H. Wilkeson, /Feby 1863    Washington, D.C.” At some time later, but not recently, someone has added a bit of information on his service, “S.H.W. -Civil War Service, U.S.A. /Mustered May 4/ 61- 21st N.Y. Vol Infy. / Discharged March 27- ’65 – (Memphis, Ten) / Served in Army of Potomac – Army of / Gulf, and Army of Cumberland.”  (11th N.Y. Cav. added in pencil after Wilkeson’s signature.

Photographed by Brady, Washington, D.C.  A notation below the image reads, “Feby – 1864 -.”

Very good condition, with light trimming at bottom, but no loss to any writing.
