Description
CDV – LtCol. John W. Raymond 23rd Massachusetts Infantry. John Raymond was 33 years old, a farmer from Beverly, Mass, when his enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant into Co. E, 8th Mass Infantry in April of 1861, one of the first regiments to respond to President Lincoln’s call for 75,000 troops to suppress the Rebellion. This three month regiment mustered out in August at Boston. In December of that year he again enlisted as a captain into the 23rd Mass Infantry, Co. G, and rose to the rank of Lt.Col in July of 1864, and colonel, but not mustered. He was wounded twice during the 23rd campaigns, once at Drewry’s Bluff, Va. and again at Cold Harbor, Va., both about 2 months separate. He lived in Beverly after the war, and was a member of G.A.R. J.H, Chipman, Jr. Post 89, Beverly.
