Signed boldly on the image, ” Yours Truly Wm S. Cogswell Major 5th Conn Vols.”

William S. Cogswell, enlisted in June of 1861 as a 1st lieutenant into Co. I, 5th Conn. Vols. and was commissioned on July 22, 1861.  He mustered out with the regiment as colonel, although not mustered in that rank, and was breveted Colonel on March 12, 1865.

The 5th Connecticut served in the east engaged in several battles including Antietam, and Gettysburg, and then later moved west to join the Army of the Cumberland under Sherman’s command and his march to the sea.

Very good bust image. Comes with the brass/ gilt frame it was found in.
