Description
On the night of April 14th, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was enjoying a play at Ford’s Theater along with Mrs. Lincoln and two invited guests, when he was shot from behind, through the base of his skull, by the assassin John Wilkes Booth, an actor by trade, a southern sympathizer, who with other conspirators, chose that night to kill the president and other members of his cabinet.
For such an infamous fellow, his photographs were highly sough after, even to the point where local photographers such as J. O. Durgan, Yarmouth, Me. had to “pirate” images from other photos, to sell to their clientele.
The image is in good condition, and can be clearly seen to be a photo taken from another, not from an original negative. Given the history and circumstances, significant in it own right.
