CDV Signed – 1st Lieutenant J. D. Woods 28th New York Infantry.

Signed on the back, “J.D. Woods / 1st Lieut 28th Regt. / N.Y. Vols.”  Woods entered the service on April 4, 1861, into Co. C, as a sergeant. He mustered out with the regiment at Albany on June 2, 1863.  He was promoted to 1st sergeant, 2nd and 1st lieutenant during his time in the regiment.

The 28th New York participated in many early engagements of the war, with their biggest fight coming at Cedar Mountain in August of 1862.
