CDV – Signed By 2nd Lieutenant William H. Jewell 38th Mass Infantry. Signed on the reverse, “W.H. Jewell / 2nd Lieut Co. A / 38th Regt Mass Vols.”
William H. Jewell, from Cambridge, Ma., enlisted as a 2nd lieutenant on May 23, 1861, into Co. A, 1st Mass Infantry, and was discharged for promotion in August of 1862. He again enlisted, and commissioned as 2nd lieutenant of Co. A, 38th Mass Infantry 17 days later. Jewell was wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Va., on October 19, 1864. He returned to the regiment and later mustered out at Savannah, Ga. He also held rank as 1st lieutenant, and captain.
