Benjamin f VanTuyl enlisted at Elmira, New York as a captain, and commissioned into Co. A. 161st New York Infantry. He was discharged on September 20, 1865.
The 161st NY Infantry served in the Army of the Gulf primarily. The unit saw many actions, but participated heavily at the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads. LA. They were at Port Hudson, Cox’s Plantation, Donaldsonville, and Sabine Pass and more.
