CDV – Signed By Colonel Joseph Colburn, 59th Massachusetts Infantry – SOLD

Joseph Colburn began his service with the 13th Mass Infantry, and later with the 59th Mass Infantry, taking command of that regiment in August of 1864.  He was wounded at the battles of the 2nd Bull Run, and Petersburg, Virginia.

Description

CDV – Colonel Joseph Colburn, 59th Massachusetts Infantry.

Colonel Colburn was a 29 year old merchant from Roxbury, Mass when he enlisted as a 1st lieutenant into Co. E, of the 13th Mass Infantry on July 16, 1861.  He was wounded at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, Va. on August 30, 1862. He was later promoted to captain on February 2, 1863.  He was discharged for promotion in October, and was commissioned into the field and staff of the 59th Mass Infantry, reaching the rank of colonel in August of 1864 (not mustered, having command of the regiment. He held rank of major, lt.col. and colonel during his service with the 59th Mass.  He was wounded again at Petersburg, Va. on June 7, 1864, in the final engagements of the war ending with the surrender of confederate forces at Appomattox Court House, Va..  On April 28, 1865, with a surgeon’s certificate of disability for “hypertrophy of the heart,” Colburn was honorably discharged from the service.  Shortly after the war he relocated on Colorado, and went into the mining business.  He passed away in March of 1900, and buried in Denver, Colorado.

The image is signed, “Jos’ Colburn Lieut Col. /59th Mass Vols. / Hunky boy – going home tomorrow.” His photo is vignetted within a printed gilt oval frame.

Very good condition with some staining on the mount, and trimmed as most of military images were from a large Lowell, Mass CDV Album.
