Description
CDV- William B. Neff- 32nd Massachusetts Volunteers.
William B. Neff enlisted in 1862 into Company K, 32nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer in January of 1864, and was reported as missing at the battle of Laurel Hill, Va. In doing some research, I found that a monument was erected in Newton, will the war was still being waged, and young William’s name was listed thereon. The site regarding the monument states that William was killed at Laurel Hill, Va. at the “Bloody Angle” one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Two other soldiers from Co. K were also killed that day, and all three of their bodies were never recovered. Young William must of seen horrific action at Gettysburg at the Wheatfield, and lost 79 killed and wounded out of the 227 reported for duty.
William B’s father, William F., does not appear on the monument. His reason for discharge for disability may be related to an injury after the Battle of Fredericksburg. The son was born in Germany in 1845, so Senior surely was an emigrant as well. His birth date is not recorded but he was buried in Newton Cemetery in February of 1894. Further research need done on him.
William B. Neff’s image in a full standing view in frock coat with service stripes, with fancy 5th Corps badge pinned on. A very nice image with clipped corners, and photographed by J. Cremer & Co., Philadelphia. This photo may have been taken during the 30 day furlough in the winter of ’63-’64.
His image was found in a album with predominantly 24th New Jersey Infantry.
