Description
Civil War Cavalry Carbine Sling Swivel- Maker Marked. These iron swivels with snap hooks were used with the leather carbine sling, worn over the shoulder to prevent the carbine from being dropped while mounted.
This original example was made by “O.B. NORTH & Co / NEW HAVEN – Ct,” found in the inner snap section. On the underside of the bar is stamped, “U.S. / T.J. SHEPARD,” Inspector.
All iron surfaces are clean and smooth; snap functions properly.
This company contracted with the Government to produce 29,000 swivels from 1864-65. Many of these also saw usage for years during the Indian Wars ear.
