Description

Civil War Contract Bullseye Canteen With Sling. Contract markings appear on the spout, “C.H. & Co. PHILA,” for Code, Hopper & Co. This marking was used as of August of 1862, and all of their contracts had these 6 ring canteens.  This canteen is nearly the same as one featured in the “U.S. Army & Militia Canteens 1775-1910, by Mike O’Donnell, page 122, canteen 127, with the brown cover material of heavy twilled jean cloth. The sling is 1 1/2 inch wide herringbone cotton, and original to the canteen.

The stopper shows that it at one time had a similar colored cord wrapped around the base of the ring, and then looped around on of the sling guide.

The cover shows very little damage, and the cotton sling has several very small areas of fraying, and wear. Overall a very respectable example.
