Description

I can’t think of what else this shirt my be other than a Civil War era fireman’s shirt, worn for parades, or perhaps for baseball games, although I am not calling it a baseball jersey. The wool is nearly identical to that of federal or state issue shirts.

There is one breast pocket, wings on the shoulders that are piped on the ends. The shirts buttons down the entire length with lapels that are not functional (buttons sewn through to interior holding them down); wide collar with square flap on back as seen on a navy jumper, and embellished with white wool stars.  All the facing material is wool of the same quality, and the color is most like the main image used.  It is a crimson with the slightest hint of orange.  The shirt is finished with chevron cuffs. The numeral “6” is stenciled on the bottom rear interior. Nearly all machine sewn which is period.

There are twelve vest sized Civil War Federal general service buttons used on the shirt that I sewed there, as the buttons on the shirt when I purchased it were early 20th fire department buttons.  The original buttons could have been almost anything, including white bone types.  I took the liberty to use the CW buttons which work nicely on the shirt.

The last detail is the cotton draw string used at the base of the shirt, (a portion of the string torn away).

Mothing and soiling are at a minimum, except for the left shoulder area where some conservation would be required if you so chose.

A real looker, and as fancy as they get for this period.
