Description
Civil War Federal Hardee Hat With Infantry Insignia. This is the 1858 regulation enlisted headgear made of black felt, intended for dress, and more adorned for that purpose than this example; the complete hat would have had a “Jeff Davis eagle side plate that held the brim folded up on one side, and the infantry horn would have had regiment number and company letter. These were worn in the field, like this one, as the brim would keep the sum out of the eyes. Despite that advantage, the Hardee hat would be hot and heavier to wear than the preferred forage cap.
Both enlisted and officers would modify these Hardee hats into lower contour slouch hat.
Label inside the crown is “U.S. ARMY MANUFACTURE” (size) “4.”
Overall in very good condition with some wear, and a few tiny tears in a few places on the outer brim. A little crackling in the wool felt is from dryness and age. Sweatband tight. Infantry horn held in place by the use of a leather tong running through the loops, and the hat cord is very good with a few small areas of wear.
A fine example for this classic Civil War Federal headgear.
