Description

Civil War Maryland Appointment To A 2nd Lieutenant- Cole’s Cavalry. An impressive state officer’s appointment patriotic engraved vignettes for Charles A. Santmyer, becoming a 2nd lieutenant in Company M, 1st Regiment Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry, (vice Greenwald promoted), otherwise known as Cole’s Cavalry.  Signed by Governor Augustus W. Bradford, and Maryland Adj. Gen. Jon. S. Berry.

Accompanying the appointment are three discharges for Santmyer, the first dated 19 January,1864, from Battery A 2nd Light (Junior- 6 months)  Artillery;  I can’t make out the signatures on the front of the discharge, but the one on the back, Major Edward H. Leib, 5th U.S. Cavalry, the mustering officer, had a great history.  His story is worth reading at (https://digitalcommons.law.ou.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=5605&context=indianserialset).

There are two discharges, dates of 28 February, and 28 June, 1865. Both of these are for service in Cole’s Cavalry, serving in that regiment from the 31 March, 1864 to June 28, 1865. These were signed at different times by different officers, at different places. I believe the irregularities of the first caused the second issue. (See photos)

The earliest one is signed by Colonel Henry A. Cole, commander of the 1st PHBC. Also signed by Capt. Lewis Deitz, 5th NY H Arty, and by the army paymaster.

the last one, was issued by 2nd Lt. H.W. Pitcher, 5th New York HA, and signed for Col. Cole. Counter signed by adjutant of the regiment. On the docket, is a lengthy list of requests, and forwarding concerning Santmyer’s rank, and discharge.  (See Photos).
