An extremely scarce D-Day Painted M1.
Typical of painted helmets of the D-Day Special units like Beach Battalions, Engineers, etc. is the painted arc on this M1 helmet for a major of the Transportation Corps. The same painted insignia is also on the original liner to his helmet.
These transportation units worked closely for months prior to the invasion with SHAEF in planning and coordinating all aspects of getting an Allied Army on the shores of Normandy, applying the lessons learned from the past amphibious operations in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and South France.
I hope the photos provided are proof positive of the complete originality of this rare helmet and liner.
Beside the arc and rank on the front, the rear of the helmet has this officer’s leadership strip. Unfortunately I do not have an ID for this officer. I believe the stenciled numbers inside the pot are the last four of his service number.
The liner is made by the Firestone Tire Co.
