Description
Engraved Razor For A Zouave Soldier In Co “G” 72nd PA Infantry.
The razor was imported from England, made by Wade & Butcher, Sheffield (with original case) and was engraved with a swooping eagle with a banner in the beak, “Co G 72 / PENNA,” on cow horn. The grips are 5 3/4 inches long, and the eagle and extending engraving covers nearly the entire length. There is no record of the owner/ maker.
The blade shows good use, and has the makers name on the one side only. The case also has the maker’s name and promotional info “WADE & BUTCHER’S FAMOUS KEEN-SHAVING BOW RAZOR,” and the lid also has the company name.
The 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry, also known as “Baxter’s” or “The Fire Zouaves” were organized in Philadelphia in August of 1861. They served through to June of 1864, and saw a great deal of battle at Ball’s Bluff, Savage Station, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Gettysburg, and many other engagements.
Condition is very good.
