Fencing Bayonet Socket In Original Brown Lacquer.

The Model 1858, Type 2 fencing bayonet was made from an 1855 Springfield bayonet.  In fabricating this piece, the blade was cut away, and a box type receptacle was added with a slot to accommodate a baleen ( whalebone) blade) that was tightened down with a thumb screw mounted on the upper flat of the box. These sockets are usually found without the baleen blade with leather ball attached, due to loss and poor lasting power of baleen being subject of insect, age, and general use in the period.

In fine condition with only light wear overall.  Missing the retaining screw for bayonet.

Produced after the Civil War, circa 1870, these bayonets were issued through the 70’s, and perhaps longer, as a new Type 3 was introduced to fit on the M1873 Springfield Rifles.

Overall length is approximately 7 inches.
