Description
G.A.R. Newspaper – The Cartridge Box, By Robert Tyler 3 Editions About Gettysburg. “THE CARTRIDGE BOX” was published daily by the Robert O. Tyler Post No. 50, Hartford, Connecticut. Published by The Case, Lockwod & Brainard Co., Printers, Hartford.
These issues are date December 15th, 21st, and 22nd. There is no record of what volume or number, so I am assuming if published daily, the date would be the record. The Robert O. Tyler Post was named for this army officer, graduate of the USMA Class of 1853, served in the Yakima and Utah Wars prior to the Civil War. Tyler commanded the artillery reserve at Gettysburg. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor, and was relegated to administrated duties after that, and breveted to the rank of major general at the end of the war.
Tyler remained in the regular army after the war, with the rank of Lt. Col. in the Quartermasters Department. His home was Hartford, Ct., but died in Boston on April 1, 1874.
The three volumes offered here are the only ones I have. Their main stories (in order of date) are Custer’s Charge at Yellow Tavern, Hancock At Gettysburg, and The Surrender, April 9, 1865. Each of these have similar ads for local business, mostly insurance companies, banks, and others. The Dec. 22nd issue has a complete roster of the members for Post 50.
Condition is fine, each on separated from a larger bound volume. The Dec. 15 issue has the front and back pages almost entirely loose.
One can understand the great need for all the advertisers if this was a daily publication.
