Description
Gem Sized Tintype Of George Tompkins- 50th NY Engineers, with embossed oval vignetted carte de visite mount, taken by Thompson’s Photograph and Gem Gallery, Ithaca, N.Y. Tompkins poses wearing his state jacket, forage cap with pompom, and Berlin gloves, most likely for inspection or special occasion. he holds his 1861 pattern contract rifled musket on his lap.
George Tompkins enlisted on February, 16, 1864, as a private into the Unassigned 50th N.Y. Engineers, and he deserted on March 27, 1864 at Elmire, N.Y. I guess he just wanted to get his picture taken in a fancy uniform, holding his musket, and felling militaristic for just a few days.
A sharp clear image. The gem is 1 3/4 x 2 3/8 inches.
Fine condition.
