Description

Gutta Percha – Niles Drinking Cup Patented June 1860.  Made of hard rubber, introduced in the early 1850’s by Goodyear, or other wise known as gutta percha, this collapsible cup is complete and in fine condition.

The lid is molded with the maker’s name, “NILES DRINKING CUP * PATENTED * JUNE 5TH * 1860.”  The cup expands to about 2.5 inches high, not including the lid. Cup (not cover or base) measure 2 3/8 inches.  The color was originally black, with some of the bands retaining their original color, while lid and upper cup section have turned a brownish color.  This is correct for these Niles cups, nearly all seen have some color differences.  The cap fits loosely, as some shrinkage has occurred, friction being the only thing that held it tight.

A lighter style than the metal types that were made before and current with gutta percha cups.  A popular mess article handy for carrying in haversack or knapsack.

Great Civil War display piece.
