Identified Civilian Court Dress Coatee, Epaulets, & Photo Brooch. Identified owner was (as spelled on the paper with his name) “Peater MacGowan & Wife on the other side of him.” The small albumen images are encased inside a brass oval frame; approximately one and a half inches high.
Dark blue wool coatee with red trimmings and silver bullion work on the collar and cuffs. The buttons, made by “Firman & Sons Strand, London,” have a queen’s crown surrounded by a wreath. The coat is approximately 1850s. I have included some images and information on a higher ranking lord’s coat from the 1838 period to show the same style of uniform and bullion work.
Some light mothing, sewn edges on the button holes are loose. One button missing (at the throat.) Some light wear and toning to the epaulets, that are mounted using hooks that match up with sewn thread loops on the should which is original to the coat. The epaulets have the look of that used as far back as the 1812 era.
