Description
SSgt. Sulo Piispanen was assigned to the 409th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group (Heavy -B24s) and saw service both in the Northern Europe, and also in Italy and Mediterranean Theater of Operations. Within this grouping of material that came from his son, is a EAME campaign ribbon that has 5 bronze campaign stars with a larger silver star that represented an additional 5 campaigns.
There was only enough material remaining over the years to tell at least his story of service in WW2. Among the items, was as scrap book that had misc papers, newspaper clippings about the war, and void of the photos that were there. There are a hand full original orders from his unit, a map showing “The Libs (Liberators) Tour of Europe,” a map of Edinburgh, Scotland, and other souvenir paper, personal family documents (such as birth, marriage, etc.), “1st Anniversary Party AAF for 93rd BG,” Easter Sunrise Service, 1943, (Somewhere In England), more. An overseas cap worn by him as Past Post Commander, Massachusetts VFW, Post 10337, had ribbons attached along with pins, medals, etc.
The best of course is the fact this material identifies that he was given this ORIGINAL copy of Eisenhower’s first letter (1st SHAEF Communique to troops involved in the invasion of Normandy), to the troops. It has the two folds on the horizontal as it should, and shows age toning, having been put away with all this other material in the basement for a very long time. Maybe not significant to most, but to me quite a rarity in itself, is the EAME ribbon with all those campaign stars on it.
Just the D-Day letter alone was bringing over $500.00 years ago. A real deal!
