Japanned Tin Candle Stick & Small Glass Oil lamp – Mid 19th Century Camp Items. The black lacquer Japanned candle stick holder with original Civil War era wax candle, and a small glass molded – pewter cover and wick holder are all from Civil War lots that I’ve owned for some time. There were no names identifying these items to an particular soldier.
The tin candle stick has a base 4.5 inches diameter. The finish has largely chipped away from use, and the candle is one of several that came in a lot from a Mass Soldier who’s name I can’t remember it was so long ago I had them. The wax candle gets very soft in any kind of heat, and as you can see, the bending or straightening will be determined again and again.
The small molded glass lamp was enough in the period to give off enough light to either read or write a letter home.
Not big money, but valuable for the camp display.
