The image was probably taken prior to 1848, as in the main archive of General Swan are other images taken the same time; among them an image of his wife, who died in June of 1848.

General Swan (1809 – 1861),  was a prominent figure in Rochester, New York, originally coming from Utica. He was a druggist and grocer, merchant, inventor, industrialist, local public officer, and well know military officer.  See this site for more information on him in the main archive being offered.

The image is very good, with some toning, The case has broken at the hinge side, and with some know-how, could be fixed I’m sure.

There were no images of General Swan in military uniform.  Come with a news clipping of his obituary.
