$450.00

OG For 1910 – Carpenter’s Mate 3rd Class, Neal R. Edwards, USS Charleston, CA-22 In China.

Edwards career in the Navy began in 1908, having entered service from Paducah, Kentucky. Edwards was born in 1882, and was 5 feet, 8 inches tall, etc., and describes quite the tattoo.

He rose in the ranks as a carpenter’s mate, beginning in the 3rd Class grade to Chief Carpenter.   His leather case holding several pages of service on various ships and stations is covered in information he recorded over his career (see photos).  I will photograph the pages for you.  Besides the sheets showing duty assignments, are three of his appointments through the years.

I have not researched the names (signatures) of the officers who made notations in the papers for each entry of ship or station.

From 8/ 1941 to 12/ 1941 Edwards was at the U.S. Naval Training Station at San Diego, Cal., with the last two months of that time in the U.S. Naval Hospital, and the notation, ” Released from active duty this date in accordance with BuNav Ltr. ……not physically qualified for mobilization ashore. His last several years was an assignment in a couple of naval armories.  More here to glean.

Overall in very good condition.  A super, somewhat phonetically written journal with far more content than mentioned.
