Description

Lieutenant Colonel Richard L. Shaw, Engineer Grouping.

Shaw served in the 1554th Heavy Ponton Bridge Battalion, 5th Army (while in North Africa and Italy), the 669th Engineer Topographical Company and the XIII Army Corps (while in the Netherlands and Germany). Shaw was born in Clinton, Massachusetts in 1913. He attended MIT for an engineering degree and was activated in 1942, where he served in North Africa, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany.

The grouping includes:

– Shaw’s M1 Helmet and liner: Complete and in very nice condition. Both liner and helmet identified to Shaw by either name and/or service number. On the right side of the helmet is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s insignia in yellow paint. The photos show the helmet and insignia with two of the photos enhanced to show greater detail.

– Pith Helmet: Light wear and discoloration throughout, some staining due to use with cap badge. The helmet is identified to Shaw on the inside of the helmet.

– Two Service Caps: Both caps identified to Shaw, marked as size 7 1/4.
Dark Green Service Cap: Sewn on name tag inside the cap; Maker is Harding, Army & Navy Uniforms; Sweatband has parts near the back where the stitching has come undone and is loose from the rest of the cap. Chin strap and visor have very little wear; Cap Badge has nice toning and patina throughout. There is small area of wear on the top of the cap.

Tan Service Cap: Name written on paper inside the cap; Maker is Bancroft Uniforms; Stitching along border of sweatband is sound and has light wear overall. Chin strap and visor have very little wear; Cap Badge has light toning overall with a few areas of patina. Surface of cap has a few areas of wear.

– Money Belt: Wear and discoloration throughout. There are a few small areas where the stitching has come undone or is fraying, does not affect the function of the money belt.

– Rain Cap Cover – has two small tears on the top of the cover, no signs of cracking, elastic band is playable, but stitching appears to be delicate.

– Corps of Engineers U.S. Army Ponton Bridge, 25 Ton Model 1941, plaque. The date on the plaque is 6-30-41

– Two patches belonging to Shaw, 5th Army & XIII Army Corps

Also included with the grouping is small computer printed picture with a brief history of Shaw’s service and a two page print out giving some more information on Shaw.
