Description
M1840 Musician’s Sword, made by C. Roby, W. Chelmsford, MS.
28 1/2 inch blade retaining most of the original polish, with extremely light blemishing. Maker stamp is the typical circular one. The other side marked “U.S. / 1863 ‘ F.S.S.” The original Moroccan leather washer is present.
Brass hilt has a nice untouched mellow patina. Guard bow marked “F.S.S.” (Inspector).
Leather scabbard is very good, showing some heavier stress cracking, but not going through leather (surface chipping around that area). Seam threads are all intact. Drag is missing to retaining pins; marked with the same inspector’s initials. Throat has the original red wool lining. Scabbard is sound, but should not be stressed by holding horizontal.
A very good – fine Musician’s sword.
