Description
M1861 Cartridge Box & Identified Canteen From Mass Estate. The cartridge box was made at the Watertown Arsenal, Mass. in 1864, complete with sling and breast plate, and tins. The box is untouched concerning condition with the exception of leather thongs holding the box plate in place having been replaced with newer ones. There are some old repairs to the sling tongues; one extended with string and an additional section of leather, and the other cut back into the sling proper to allow attachment to the buckle. This is a very old and likely period done.
The M1858 smooth sided canteen with pewter spout, has the soldier’s name carved in to it, “H. Crocker.” The stopper is likely a replacement as it fits poorly. The original tan canvas cover shows wear, stains, and nearly all intact. The sling is a thick hemp rope of 3/8 inch thick. It has the age to be a period replacement, could go either way, and broken.
These two pieces came from a southeastern Mass auction, but no other provenance other than the name on the canteen.
A nice pair ideal for display.
