Description
Contractors did a remarkable job of loading up the US Ordnance Department with much more inventory than could ever be used…..but the Ord. Dept. did their best to issue it some way.
Like many other pieces of issue clothing and equipment, this M1863 holster issued with large frame revolvers such as the Colt and Remington .44 caliber models. probably never got issued during the Civil War, but eventually found its way out west with the increase of U.S. cavalry regiments after the war.
This holster shows the signs in the body where the bulge of the extractor rod housing pushes outward, this being made through use with either the Colt Richard’s Conversion of the 1860 Army revolver, or possibly for a bit later issue of the Colt Single Action Army revolver.
The Government used their surplus of these army holsters, by modifying in many ways, but with this one it saw no such change, and more than likely was one of the first to go west. So what we have is a standard Civil War issue holster, unchanged, yet used with a revolver it was not intended for.
The condition of the leather on this holster is very good, with wear and crackled finish over the entire surface of the leather, but in far better shape than most encountered today. The contractor marking on the flap is visible but not bold. All the original leather is here, with a few repairs to stitching on the plug, and in the seam near where the trigger guard meet leather. Only a few small areas of leather finish loss.
Its not the Missing-Link, but not one easily found. A nice desirable Indian Wars holster.
