Description

Major John H. Roberts – 4th New Hampshire Vols – Shoulder Straps & 10th Corps Badge.

This lot consists of shoulder straps, corps badge, 2 small reunion ribbons and a link ID bracelet of some kind.

The shoulder straps, in the grade of major have the darker velvet background signifying infantry. the gilt work is in fine condition, showing slight age toning. A 10th Army Corps badge shows this unit was once in both the 2nd and 3rd battalions, having both white and blue worked into the badge, bordered by gilt bullion on the outside, and a thin wire bullion on the inner blue section. Initially, the 4th NH Vols were part of the 2nd Division, with some time part of the 3rd Division while serving in the Dept.of the South, and later the Army of the James.

There has been some moth damage in the white wool areas, but if one desired, that could be easily remedied.

Completing the lot are two small red white and blue ribbons, one for the 4th NH Vols for the 49th anniversary, and the other, another reunion held at Manchester, NH, dated Sept. 1901. (both 4+ inches each).  The small metal bracelet, or whatever it was intended, with the major’s name on it per segment.

John H. Roberts, from Dover, NH, enlisted on April 17, 1861 as a sergeant, and mustered into Co. A. 1st NH Infantry, mustering out after 3 months.  He mustered into  Co. A, of the 4th NH on September 18.1861, and mustered out at Raleigh, NC. on August 23, 1865.  During his time in service he held rank from Sergeant, 1st Sergeant, 2nd & 1st Lieutenant (by 1862.
