Description

Mann’s Patent Cartridge Box with Single Shoulder Strap.

A late war cartridge box issued in December of 1863. patented by Col. W.D. Mann.  The accoutrements were designed to allow easier access to cartridges being worn on the front of the soldier’s belt.  The strap worked in conjunction with a brace style system making all the equipment more comfortable and accessible.

The flap is stamped with a double-bordered oval with 1” high embossed letters “US” inside. Within the border is stamped, “COLONEL MANN’S PATENT REISSUED JUNE 7TH 1864 / E. GAYLORD MAKER-CHICOPEE, MASS.” A sub inspector’s stamp is just below and to the right.

Overall in very good condition, with wear to the embossed markings on the flap, and general wear. The strap is intact, and has some surface leather flaking, but very good overall.

Not the typical cartridge carrier from the Civil War era, but one that embraced needed change that would benefit an army in the field.

Very good condition.
