The shotgun is more accurately described as the 1881 Springfield Forager.
The Metcalf Revolver belt model 1882 had a leather panel that held 12 canvas web loops for .45 Colt cartridges. This item was modified to hold 6 shotgun shells for the 1881 Springfield Forager. The leather is choice, still retaining the 4 brass eyelets that were used to run the leather thongs through to attach to the belt. The canvas is from a commercial shotgun belt and machine sewn inplace. The original holes for the revolver loops are visible.
A neat, and scarce soldier modification. Might have been used for more than just hunting game.
Fine + condition.
