Mexican War Era Annual Estimate of Clothing At Allegheny Arsenal 1847, and includes an integral letter by Asst. QM General Henry Stanton, approving the forwarding of the order for clothing to Captain Edward Harding’s Ordnance co. at Allegheny Arsenal. This printed form document includes most of the needed equipment any company in the army at the time needed, with manuscript additions. This Estimate is signed as well by Stanton.
Henry Stanton, (1796 – 1856). A career army officer, born in Vermont. Began his military career as a lieutenant of light artillery in June of 1813, and was appointed assistant deputy quartermaster general that same year. He served in Florida, during the Seminole War era, and was brevetted to brigadier general for meritorious conduct in the Mexican War in 1847. He died at Fort Hamilton, New York Harbor, August 1, 1856.
Edward Harding, USMA Class of 1818. Entered service as 2nd Lt., Corps of Artillery, with service at Forts, McHenry, Sackett’s Harbor, Covington, N.Y., and Niagara. 1st Lt. 2nd Artillery, May of 1826, on Ordnance duty from March of 1828 to May of 1832, as Asst. Ordnance officer at Allegheny Arsenal, Pittsburgh, Pa., and in command at the station in 1832 in the rank of captain. Service at Mount Vernon Arsenal, Ala, ’32 -38, and Augusta Arsenal, Ga. ’38 -’41; Allegheny Arsenal ’41 – ’47; one year at Fort Monroe Arsenal, Va, and back to Allegheny to 1851.
Promoted to major in July of 1850, and served at Watertown Arsenal, Mass, ’51 – 54 and then St. Louis Arsenal, Mo, ’54 – 55; he died there on February 15th, 1855.
