Description
Model 1878 Blanket Bag, made at the Indianapolis Arsenal. Heavy tan canvas constructed pack with tin buttons and leather tie downs. Condition is fine with typical soiled and light stained patina. The inner flap is identified to Capt John Mahon, Ordnance Dept., U.S.A. , stenciled in black ink.
Mahon does not show up in Heitman’s Register of Army Officers with goes up to 1901, so I have to assume that Mahon is an officer in the WWI period, who repurposed the bag in a later era than the Indian War.
There is another name written in pen, W. Schnieder.
A nice bag.
