Model 1878 Modified Canteen. This canteen uses the Model 1858 canteen of 7 rings beneath the heavy canvas cover. with stenciled U.S. on one side, and 4th Virginia Infantry crossed rifle stencil with the soldiers equipment number “18.” This canteen may have been issued to the Virginia National Guard in the Spanish American War era. Identified to “Lane.”

The upper sling guides have tin brackets applied with triangular ring for attaching the Model 1878 leather sling. The pewter spout has its original brass ring to which is attached the brass safety chain, model of 1874.

The black bridle leather sling is full length, having its leather tightening slides, and brass equipment hooks. Crackled leather overall, with some chipping near the area between the equiment hooks, and brass adjustment hooks.

Typical wear, dings to spout and canvas, overall very good.
