Oil Painting of Sub Chaser “SC-1293” Signed By Listed Artist Sam Sargent. Depicted here is Sub Chaser 1293, painted during WWII by Sargent, who lived and worked very near where this boat was built by W.A. Robinson, Inc. Ipswich, Massachusetts. The boat was laid down 1 August, 1942, launched 20 October, ’42, and Commissioned 2 June, 1943. These Sub Chasers were built to take on German U-boats; small, fast vessels more capable of dealing with enemy subs than most other surface ships. SC-1293 cruised along eastern coastal waters and harbors. I have no record of this boat’s service during the war.
The oil painting on board is signed by Sargent, and measures 18.5 x 14.5 inches framed. On the back is a biography of the artist, along with additional info on him, and on SC-1293. (photo copies).
Sam Sargent (1889-1959), was born in Newburyport, Ma. He was a painter and art teacher. He founded the Sargent School of Painting in Newburyport, in 1942. His works included landscapes, seascapes, and portraits over a 70 year career.
The painting retains its brilliant colors, and captures the fine details of this craft. The work appears to have never been framed, or reframed recently due to unpainted canvas visible at the corners. An important work of art, as well as Naval history from WWII.
