Description
Years ago I could find these several time a year, and now, hardly ever do they show up! This knapsack is still in its original brick red paint on canvas. One piece of canvas folded to form the body of the knapsack, being hand sewn on the edges. Leather straps are sewn down to canvas, holding small roller buckles for fasting the upper flap. Most of the original shoulder straps are gone with tracing remaining.
This knapsack was not kept in a safe place and the black paint used for the oval background on flap has flaked a great deal, leaving traces of gold as well that was used for the lettering (either the soldier’s initials or company initials). Under the flap a more vibrant color is protected.
Still a most desirable item from that early 19th century era, where the militia was an important component of the state military establishment and local society.
Measures, 16″ wide x 14″ high.
