A pair of large cast brass eagle door knobs.
This pair of brass door knobs, purchased recently out of a collection, has a verbal provenance that they came out of the Old Executive Building in Washington, D.C. after some recent restoration there several years back. I believe there was a fire that occurred there, but I have no idea if that event coincides with the release of these knobs.
The eagle is very similar to a navy style eagle seen on buttons in the 19th century (without the fowled anchor). The mechanism is complete, and I assume there were plates that each side fit into that did not come with the knobs. There are no markings visible.
The diameter of the knob is 55mm approximately.
A great looking pair of architectural pieces from the 19th century, with a provenance I personally believe, and will share with interested parties.
The Old Executive Building originally housed the War Department for all branches of service. Think of the hands that may have touched these very items.
