Patent 1859 Stuart’s Attachment Saber Hangers Made by E. Gaylord – Chicopee – SOLD

Patent 1859 Stuart’s Attachment Saber Hangers Made by E. Gaylord – Chicopee, Massachusetts., and marked on the brass bar.  This is likely a Civil War period made hangers.  1st Lt. J.E.B. Stuart patented these hangers before becoming a Confederate State cavalry officer, rising to the rank of general and killed in 1864 at Yellow Tavern, Va.  This hanger pattern was used throughout the Civil War in limited numbers; The Government purchased the patent rights and produced these after the war at Frankfort Arsenal.  but were again issued in the 1870s  and used well into the Indian Wars years. The construction is very similar to the M1885 saber hangers, but do to cost, the spring bar attached to the Stuart hangers was eliminated. The purpose of the bar under the brass hook was designed to keep the hangers from twisting while on the belt.

The leather of this piece is supple, and does show overall wear.  Untouched leather and complete with its original leather slides.
