Philippine Insurrection Teak Trunk Id’d To W. Streevy, Co. “F” 42nd US Volunteer Infantry With Contents. This grouping consists of Walter Streevy’s unit stenciled trunk, photographs of himself and other in his unit, personal items, insignia, puttees, various types of ammunition brought home from the Philippines.

Walter H. Streevy, enlisted into the army, according to the Scranton Tribune of Sept. 18, 1899, that he and two others reported to a recruiting station at week. The appointment to corporal in Company “F” is dated April 20, 1901.  The 42nd arrived in the Philippines (Manilla), Dec. 31, 1899 to 1901.  Their service was marked with tolerance, and helpfulness concerning the natives which lead to establishing their new government; often had hazardous duty, and performed well under that region’s conditions.  Left for US in May 29, aboard the Transport OHIO, and arrived at San Francisco June 20, 1901.

This is a list of items (in general):

  • Teak wood trunk, stenciled to Co. F, 42nd Vol. Inf. on both sides, his name is painted boldly in black and red paint.  It measures 31x 15×15.  The opposite side (not photographed) is missing the handle with only the brackets remaining.  The swivel brass handle is broken in one place. Some cracks, there is an upper tray, and the inside lie shows that some photos or paper items had been removed. Corners and edges are protected by sheet brass.
  • 8 photographs, 4 of Streevy, alone and with a bugler, and 2 of these are carte de visite sized. Some of the photos have thin onion paper with and without printed photographer info, and one printed envelope for a pair.
  • Appointment to corporal in April of 1901, and signed by Colonel James Milton Thompson, 1843- 1922.  Civil War service with the 7th NH Infantry, 1st SC Vols. (Colored – 1st Colored regt to be mustered into federal service), with designation changed to 33rd USCT. In 1866 commissioned 2nd Lt. in the 38th U.S. Infantry, stationed on the Kansas Frontier and was associated with George Custer and Buffalo Bill, transferred to the 24th US Infantry (Black) with service in Texas, commanded several inter-army rifle contests in the 1880s-90s, cited for bravery several times in his career, He retired as a brigadier general in 1905.    1st Lieutenant Robert McAndrews, Battalion Adjutant, 42nd Vol. Inf. He was an engineer prior to joining the 42nd in August of 1899, and mustered out, transferring to the 1st Cavalry in Feb. of 1901.  (have photocopied reference for both).
  • M1896 cap insignia for Co. F, 42nd, and another for Co.A, 28th infantry.
  • Personal items, razor with Streevy’s named signed on inner case throat. Razor in fine condition, mouth-piece for bugle, trouser buttons, lid to a Philippine medal from the Presidio, pocket knife (rough), key, empty cigarette, pencil…..
  • Canvas puttees, unit stenciled.  Fine condition.
  • Cartridges unfired, expended, loose lead for .45/70 rifle, etc.  REFER TO THE LOT IMAGE OF CARTRIDGES.  L TO R.

  • Unknown maybe Spanish, split brass casing, lead seated in and very weak markings but similar to the next 3;

  • German? “IV / 18 / 96/ K&C”;
  • .30 Army, with wooden bullet, coated and chipping – “U.M.C. / .30 U.S.A.”;
  • ? can’t make out;  30 Army,
  • ” W.R.A. Co. .30 U.S.G.”;
  • 30 Army, “U.S.C. Co. / 30 GOV.”;
  • other misc lead..
  • North Carolina Plug Cut Tobacco, Marburg Bros.  Holing on one side, partial tax seal stamp on right side. 5 inches high approx.
